Iíve wanted to color something from Avatar for quite sometime. I just have not found anything to my liking until now. Jinjinbun has drawn some really nice artwork with Aang as a girl and Toph as a very handsome boy with some serious muscles on him. Anyway, this was my first attempt at coloring her work. The link to the original black and white can be found here

I really like this. Someone actually CHANGED Toph! No one ever does that, they just say she's the same.

Most artists tend to focus on Aang because during the series several times he was referred to as twinkle toes by Toph. Even the Ember Island play had a female play his part (much to his displeasure).

I think Toph as a boy shows a bit more confidence in himself, and girl Aang is far more willing to take direction from him. The drawing really makes both of them look like a pretty cute couple.

I am glad you liked it. ^^

I chose to have Aang have brown hair for two reasons. First, I'm not that good at making black hair look all that good (I was fairly lucky with Toph). Admittedly, I'm not much better coloring brown hair, but it was a compromise I was willing to live with. Second reason for choosing brown hair over black was I felt it made Aang look more feminine. Let's face it; in the series he did look rather masculine once he had that black hair on his head, quite handsome in point of fact.

The ultimate bottom line is it did look good to me, the artist didn't raise any objections, and I have seen other art depicting a gender bender Aang with brown hair, not much, but others have apparently had the same idea that I had. A few examples:

Yes, Aang should have black hair as the original creators of the character intended. I tried to do something a bit different. I was happy with the result, and even though you may not like it as much I do thank you for your comment. I sincerely doubt I'll go back and change the color of the hair; I have quite a few coloring projects I'm working on and can never find the time to color them all.

oh i see, nah nah its not that i dont like it i mean i do like your coloring, but i just wondered why it didnt have black hair. but you did do a great job, i had to ink black hair and it is kinda difficult to get around it but we all gain experince from artist to another ^^ and i suppose if people prefer brown hair i guess it would so xD i mean everyone is doing it arent they xD

Actually, Red and blond hair are my favorites to color because they are the easiest for me to play with. Of course either one of those would have gone too far for Aang or Toph. Aang with blond hair and Toph as a red head? Wow…I think no artist would ever allow me to color anything else If I tried to post that on DA.

I do try to challenge myself with both browns and blacks. In fact, I’m in the middle of a project that turns a famous anime male character, which has black hair, into another well known anime female character that has brown hair; transitioning from my least favorite color into my second least favorite color. We will see how it turns out, but so far so good.

Thank you for saying you like my coloring. I know I'm not the world's best colorist; it is a process that takes time to learn. I'm always glad to hear someone has liked something I had a hand in.

and np i at least your coloring is better than me xD and it is a process indeed. but as you develope you grow older along with your new found skills. and thank you for commenting ^^

Good Gender Bender artworks - it's rarely to see some of ATLA, especially such good ones. Great job!

Thank you, I’m always looking for something to color. TG Themed stuff seems to be fairly popular, and well, I love magical TFs. Thankfully all the artists I’ve asked permission to color and post their work have said yes to me.

Normally I'm not particularly fond of character gender switches, but I love this piece! The designs are perfect, and your coloring is really remarkable. It brings them alive and they look great. ^_^

Thank you very much. What struck me so much about Jinjinbun’s drawings was the fact she drew Aang to look very much like a ten year old girl. The expression on both Aang and Toph really mirror the television series quite nicely. The coloring was tremendous fun and I may ask Jinjinbun sometime in the future to possibly color more of her work.

You're very welcome, and yeah, I agree. They're very in-character, which is really quite an accomplishment.
